Sourcing Charcoal from Thailand: Grades, Quality Checks & Export Packaging

By Bangkok Export Team · Bangkok, Thailand

Thai charcoal — from traditional hardwood black charcoal to premium binchotan-style white charcoal — is in steady demand from BBQ restaurants, importers and private-label brands. Here is what buyers should know before placing a first order.

Know your two product families

  • Hardwood (black) charcoal: kiln-charred hardwood chunks, fixed carbon around 75%+, burning 2–4 hours. The economical choice for BBQ and general restaurant use.
  • White (binchotan-style) charcoal: finished at very high temperatures, fixed carbon 85–90%, burning 3–5 hours with minimal smoke and no odor. The premium choice for Japanese-style BBQ, yakiniku and high-end restaurants.

Quality checks that matter

Moisture content

Moisture above ~8% shortens burning time and causes sparking. Ask for the value per shipment and confirm it on the specification sheet.

Fixed carbon and ash

Higher fixed carbon means longer, steadier burning; low ash keeps grills clean. These two figures are the fastest way to compare offers that look similar on price.

The burning test

For restaurant buyers, a simple burning test (light, time to full burn, smoke level, spark behavior, ash color) is the most convincing quality evidence. We can arrange pre-shipment burning tests on request.

Export packing is part of quality

Charcoal is dusty and fragile — packing determines what arrives at your warehouse:

  • Carton boxes (10/15/20 kg) — standard for retail and restaurant supply.
  • PP bags — economical for industrial buyers.
  • Palletized loading with ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets keeps cartons intact through transit.

A 20ft container typically loads ~8–10 MT boxed; a 40ft HC around 14–17 MT depending on box size.

Documents for smooth customs clearance

Wood products often require a fumigation certificate and, in some destinations, a phytosanitary certificate. Confirm destination requirements before booking — see our export & logistics page for the full document list.
